Macon-Bibb County upgrades tornado siren system with SPLOST funds

Macon, GA – Macon-Bibb County has begun upgrading its tornado and severe weather siren system using voter-approved SPLOST funds, with the first materials recently delivered.

Last week, the first 50-foot concrete poles arrived as part of the project to replace outdated equipment across the county.

In total, all 56 existing sirens will be upgraded, 27 new sirens will be added, and five years of maintenance is included in the nearly $3 million investment.

“Public safety is one of our community’s top priorities,” said Mayor Lester Miller.

“This project will help make sure the sirens work when needed and expand the areas where they can be heard.”

While the upgrades are underway, officials said the current siren system will remain operational. Installation is expected to begin in mid-May.

Emergency officials also emphasized that outdoor sirens are only one part of a broader alert system.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for MBCAlert, keep a weather radio on hand, and follow local media for updates.
